Frieda Kemp, 91, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, in Los Angeles, Calif.

She was born in Poland and grew up in Chicago. In 1936, she married Abe Kemp and moved to Duluth, where she resided for 60 years. Mrs. Kemp worked with and helped her husband in his business, A. Kemp Fisheries. She worked with and helped her son, Louis, at A. Kemp Fisheries, Kemp Pacific Fisheries, Kemp Paulucci Seafood Co. and Louis Kemp Seafood Co.

She received international notoriety when, in 1984, a ship named after her, the Frieda K., was confiscated by the Russian navy off the coast of Alaska and taken to Siberia along with the entire crew. The ship and crew were later released through negotiations by the State Department.

Mrs. Kemp's children, as well as her late husband, have credited her with being the foundation and the righteous inspiration of their family endeavors and life experiences.

Mrs. Kemp was a member of Haddassah and Temple Israel.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Kemp of Los Angeles; a son, Louis of Los Angeles; grandsons Aarron and Abraham; granddaughters Elana, Sarah and Rachel; brother Jack Figler of Los Angeles and Myer Figler of Las Vegas; and a sister, Ester Shadrow of Los Angeles.

Memorials will be accepted in her name in care of Ohr Eliyahu Academy, 5950 Stone View Drive, Culver City, CA 90232.
